Youngest F1 world champions: where Kimi Antonelli would rank if he wins in Mexico City

Kimi Antonelli needs two points at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday, November 1 to become world champion, Reuters reports. If he does it, he becomes the youngest champion in the history of the sport by a wide margin.

How old Antonelli would be

Antonelli was born on August 25, 2006 in Bologna, according to his Mercedes profile. On November 1, 2026 he would be 20 years and 68 days old. That is Grid and Pit arithmetic, and it would beat Sebastian Vettel's record by more than three years.

The current youngest champions

These are the youngest drivers to win their first title, with ages from the Wikipedia list of champions, which matches STATS F1.

Rank Driver Age at first title Season
1 Sebastian Vettel 23 years, 134 days 2010
2 Lewis Hamilton 23 years, 300 days 2008
3 Fernando Alonso 24 years, 58 days 2005
4 Max Verstappen 24 years, 73 days 2021
5 Emerson Fittipaldi 25 years, 273 days 1972
6 Michael Schumacher 25 years, 314 days 1994
7 Lando Norris 26 years, 24 days 2025
8 Niki Lauda 26 years, 197 days 1975
9 Jacques Villeneuve 26 years, 200 days 1997
10 Jim Clark 27 years, 188 days 1963

Some outlets quote Vettel's age a day differently depending on how they count, but Guinness World Records also lists 23 years and 134 days, set at the 2010 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Italy's long wait

Reuters says a title would make Antonelli Italy's first champion in 73 years. The last was Alberto Ascari, who won in 1952 and 1953, according to STATS F1. Giuseppe Farina, the first champion in 1950, was also Italian. Antonelli is in only his second season and has nine wins this year, Reuters notes, including Monza, where he became the first Italian to win there since 1966.

"It would be very cool to close this off, to be the next Italian champion, but of course then this has to be just the beginning," Antonelli told Reuters in Austin.

The American comparison

Only two Americans have won the drivers' title, both listed by Wikipedia: Phil Hill in 1961 and Mario Andretti in 1978. STATS F1 gives their ages as 34 and 38, so Antonelli would be roughly half Andretti's age when he won.

What he needs on Sunday

Antonelli leads George Russell by 123 points and Lewis Hamilton by 124, Sky Sports reports. He is champion if he finishes ninth or better, or if neither Russell nor Hamilton wins. The full scenarios are in how Antonelli can clinch in Mexico City, and our tiebreak explainer covers why ninth is enough. The race starts at 3 PM Eastern, noon Pacific; see the Mexico City times guide for your zone.
